"Discover Schliemann's world" - under this motto, the Schliemann Museum in Ankershagen, Mecklenburg, has been leading visitors through the multifaceted life of Heinrich Schliemann with a new exhibition since June 2019.

The museum is located in the 18th century rectory where Heinrich Schliemann spent his childhood.

Personal documents, photos and diary entries, quotes and contemporary witnesses show the man Heinrich Schliemann, the multimillionaire, progressive scientist and archaeologist, autodidact and cosmopolitan, in ten themed rooms. Interactive media stations also provide exciting information about each phase of his life.

      Trojan horse on the forecourt of the museum

      The "Trojan Horse" on the forecourt of the museum grounds in Ankershagen is a landmark of the region.
      It is based on Homer's legend of the Trojan War and the Greeks' cunning that decided the war. According to legend, they left a huge wooden horse at the gates of the city, which had been impregnable for ten years, and faked their departure. In fact, the best warriors were hidden inside the horse. They opened the gates of the city from the inside at night after the Trojans had brought the supposed gift into the city despite warnings. This is how the Greeks finally managed to defeat Troy.
      In 1996, the playground equipment, which is particularly popular with children, with its slide, was inaugurated after a design by the sculptor Walter Preik. At the end of 2017, the aging horse had to be locked up for safety reasons. In 2019 it was replaced by a faithful replica. Since May 18, 2019, the six-meter-high and ten-meter-long "Trojan Horse" has once again welcomed visitors to Ankershagen and the Schliemann Museum.
