Description Destination

The main street is the pedestrian zone in Tiengen. Numerous shops and restaurants line up here. But this pretty little town is not only charming as a promenade. Many historic buildings, special facades and winding alleys also invite you to visit.
In Tiengen's pedestrian zone, visitors will find numerous shops and many restaurants with a wide range of offerings. This makes strolling along the promenade really fun. And if you overcome your shopping spree and turn your gaze away from the shopping on offer, you will find a beautiful old town with impressive historical buildings, beautiful facades and small, winding alleys in the small town. Directly on the main street you can see the Lion Monument, the town hall, the Joseph and Mary fountains and facade paintings.
The two districts of Waldshut and Tiengen, together with the ten idyllically located districts, form a diverse overall package for holidaymakers in the region. In Waldshut and Tiengen you will find two historic old towns that are completely different in their structure and are unique and beautiful in their own way. Stately homes, imposing gates, high towers, decorative churches and colorful murals leave a lasting impression. The ten smaller districts (Aichen-Gutenburg, Breitenfeld, Detzeln, Eschbach, Gaiß-Waldkirch, Gurtweil, Indlekofen, Krenkingen, Oberalpfen and Schmitzingen) are all located in wonderful, quiet nature and promise plenty of relaxation. On long hikes, leisurely walks or scenic bike rides you can switch off your thoughts and leave everyday life behind you.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Catholic Parish Church of St. Mary's Assumption
Catholic Parish Church of St. Mary's Assumption

The magnificent parish church in Tiengen is a late work by the famous Vorarlberg Baroque architect Peter Thumb (1681 - 1766). It was built between 1753 and 1755, with the lower part of the tower being taken from the Gothic predecessor, which is why it differs from the rest of the church's appearance. The Rococo stuccowork was done by the Wessobrunner master Johann Georg Gigl and the ceiling paintings were painted by the young Eustachius Gabriel from Upper Swabia. The large frescoes show, among other things, the Assumption of Mary, the Transfiguration of Christ and Sebastian and Agatha, who are revered as patron saints of the city. A special feature are the various emblems with sayings from ancient authors, which are assigned to appropriate Bible quotations. The entire splendor of the Baroque and the architect's long experience blossom once again in this impressively harmonious work of architecture, despite the simple facade. During the Kulturkampf from 1874 to 1883, the church was used by the Old Catholic community.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Tiengen Castle
      Tiengen Castle

The Tiengen Castle consists of three parts, the “Old Castle”, the “New Castle” and the “Small Castle”. It goes back to a castle belonging to the Lords of Krenkingen, which has been documented since the 13th century. During a siege by Swiss troops in 1499, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt in the middle of the 16th century. The “Old Castle” forms the northern part of the entire complex and includes the residential tower of the old castle. Today, the rooms house the Klettgau Museum with a local history collection with archaeological finds from excavations in the Klettgau and the “Jewish Room” with the history of Judaism in Tiengen. The southern part of the castle, the “New Castle”, was only built during reconstruction in the 16th century. At that time it was the residence of the Counts of Sulz, but was destroyed again in the Thirty Years' War. In the following decades it was rebuilt based on the previous building. Since 1687 it belonged to the Princes of Schwarzenberg and in the 18th century the interior was converted into a baroque style. The sovereign himself no longer resided permanently in Tiengen and government officials were housed in the castle. From 1806, Tiengen belonged to Baden and the castle became the administrative building of the new state. Today it is privately owned. Cultural events often take place in the castle cellar and the castle courtyard is also often used for summer concerts or similar events. The “Small Castle” was once the chancellery and is located in the north-eastern part of the complex. For a time it also served as an archive, and since the 19th century it has been used by the Catholic Church as a chaplaincy.
Right next to the castle is the castle park, a green oasis that promises relaxation right next to the hustle and bustle of the old town. In the middle is the sculpture “Baroque” by the Tiengen artist Josef Briechle. The circular steel sculpture is blue on the inside and black on the outside and is intended to represent the baroque structures of the castle and the nearby Catholic parish church in a modern design language.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Old oil mill
      Old oil mill

An early modern oil mill has been documented since the 18th century. The furnishings are made entirely of wood and the press chair dates from 1858. An overshot water wheel was used to operate the system. The mill was in operation until the 1950s, when the last oil miller, Luise Mutter, died in 1956. Oilseeds such as walnuts, poppy seeds, beech nuts and rapeseed were processed. The mill's catchment area extended across the entire current district and into Switzerland. From 1995 to 1999, the building was restored by the "Association for the Renovation of the Old Oil Mill Tiengen e.V." Today, the old oil mill is running again and can be visited as part of a private tour.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Stork Tower
      Stork Tower

The "Stork Tower" is known as the landmark of the city of Tiengen. As a corner tower, it was part of the city fortifications, which were demolished in the middle of the 19th century. It also served as a prison for a time and was known as the "Thieves' Tower". It got its current name because its hood, which was added in 1899, temporarily carried a stork's nest in which pairs of storks actually nested. Today, the interior of the Stork Tower can be visited as part of city tours.
In the courtyard of the "Stork Tower" stands the "Concrete Arm", a sculpture by the artist Behrouz Varghaiyan from 2008. The sculpture made of concrete and steel represents sacks of cement that are squeezed into the steel frame that looks like barbed wire.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Jewish Cemetery
      Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish cemetery was established in Tiengen in the 18th century. Not only Tiengen Jews were buried here, but also members of the local synagogue community. In November 1938, the cemetery was desecrated by the Nazis and most of the gravestones were destroyed. The city had the remains built into a retaining wall. In 1998, they were returned to the cemetery and in 2000, the Tiengen stonemason and master stone sculptor Uwe Jund artistically transformed them into a memorial column. Otherwise, only three gravestones have survived, which have been on the eastern cemetery wall since the reconstruction in 1945.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Vitibuck Tower
      Vitibuck Tower

The Vitibuck Tower is a popular viewing point for all Tiengen residents and visitors to the town. Its viewing platform at a height of 37 meters offers a wonderful view of Tiengen and the surrounding area, and on a clear day even over the Küssaburg and as far as the Alps. Whether in the bright summer sunshine or covered in snow, the view is worth it in any season!
The tower is located on the local mountain “Vitibuck”, an offshoot of the “Hohen Brand” (637 m), at a height of 458 meters. At the foot there is also a small hiking car park, a barbecue area and a children's playground. This means that a visit to the Vitibuck can be perfectly combined with a short hike, a delicious snack or a freshly grilled sausage.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Langenstein
      Langenstein

The “Long Stone” or “Langenstein” has been standing in Tiengen near the banks of the Wutach for some time. It used to be called “Chindlistei”, which in dialect can be translated as “Children’s Stone”. According to legend, a good fairy lived inside him and offered her help with infertility. That is why rites of passage and marriages were probably performed here in the past, which probably gave it its name at that time.
The Langenstein is a 5.92 meter high conglomerate pillar. It contains pebbles whose orientation suggests that the stone was erected by humans a long time ago. It has been suspected since 1936 that it was specially transported to this location, when excavations under the stone revealed burnt wood, which may have been used as transport rollers. Scientists also suspect that the stone was brought here during the Neolithic period. The location was chosen wisely because it is located exactly at the intersection of the east-west running Völkerstrasse of the Rhine Valley and the north-west running Aaretal-Strasse. In addition, the location on the banks of the Wutach was ideal for the supply of drinking water and food.
Over the years, the stone developed into an important meeting place for the citizens of Tiengen. In 1524, the people of Tiengen came together here and decided to embrace the Reformation. It is also documented that in the Middle Ages until at least the 17th century it served as the court of the Imperial Klettgau District Court. And even during the Nazi era, the place was used as a Germanic Thing site and abused for propaganda purposes.
Today it is known as the southernmost menhir in Germany and the largest of the four menhirs on the Upper Rhine. For those seeking peace and quiet, it is the ideal place to experience its special aura.

    • Historische Altstadt Tiengen Highlights at the destination Tiengen outdoor pool
      Tiengen outdoor pool

Relax in an idyllic atmosphere, enjoy the sun on your skin and experience a welcome cooling off in the cool water - the Tiengen outdoor pool is a local recreation area for the whole family in summer.
For sporty swimmers there is a 50m pool with several lanes, starting blocks and a 1m diving board. The water temperature is pleasantly cool, the pool depth ranges from 1.80m to 3.45m. The non-swimmers' pool, with a water depth of 0.70 m and a slide, offers true bathing pleasure for young and old. And even the little ones are not forgotten. The paddling pool is only 0.25m deep and has a small slide. Sun sails provide protection for sensitive skin. There are many play equipment available on the surrounding playground.
If you just want to relax in the sun, you can spread out on the large lawn. If you feel a little hungry or fancy something sweet, the team at the Badcafé will be happy to help you and offer you cold and hot drinks, ice cream and other sweets as well as delicious snacks.
Parking is available directly in front of the outdoor pool entrance.
