Description Destination

The Mayen mining area is one of the oldest and most important mining sites for basalt lava. The porous stone is ideal for grain graters and millstones, especially the local one. In Roman times, the grain mills from Mayen were real export hits due to their special quality. They worked so effectively that they even rose to the rank of “essential war equipment” because the Romans could use them to supply large troop units with relatively little effort.
The bizarre, 7,000-year-old quarry is now a nature reserve and is home to countless bats. An informative walking path takes you through the middle of the site to original sites of mining history. The modern hands-on exhibition “Stone Times” gives you practical insights into the working methods of the stone breakers and interesting insights into their world.
The Grubenfeld adventure worlds are part of the Osteifel Volcano Park and are part of a volcanic industrial area, which also includes the Meurin Roman mine and the Katzenberg Roman observatory. Why not go there sometime?

      Lapidea Sculpture Park

      The LAPIDEA sculpture park is located in the Mayen mining area. It was created as a result of the symposium with international artists that takes place every three years. Stone sculptures made of basalt, the stone that was quarried in the Mayen mining area, are created there. During the symposium in the summer, you can watch the artists working on the stones. The unsold results of these symposiums can now be viewed in the sculpture park.

    • Bat Trail

      The small but very beautiful circular path through the Mayen mining area is the perfect idea for those interested in animals. The nature-oriented circular path informs young and old about the world of bats. A great highlight is shaft 700 - the home of the bats. With a bit of luck, you can watch a few of these animals sleeping here - because as we know, the small flying animals are nocturnal.
      The former open-cast mine can also be seen along the path. You can pick up some information on this path. There are 15 information pillars, 3 large information boards, a replica stonemason's hut, five benches, two sun loungers and two large insect hotels.
      So you can have a lovely day with plenty of rest opportunities in the Mayen mining area.
