Description Destination

Where could local history be better exhibited than in a historic building? High above the old town stands the Altensteig Castle, whose impressive residential tower is considered the only castle in the Black Forest that has remained undestroyed to this day. The “Old Castle” in its current form was built as a defensive structure from around 1230 onwards. The flank towers “Heaven” and “Hell” and the late Romanesque shield wall bear witness to this. The bailiffs of the Counts Palatine of Tübingen resided here. After the castle and the estate were sold to the Margraves of Baden at the end of the 14th century, the ensemble became the seat of the Baden bailiffs. In 1604, Altensteig became part of Württemberg through an exchange of territory from Baden. And the new rulers commissioned the “New Palace” around 1610.
The museum in the Old Castle also brings the history of the town of Altensteig to life in its permanent exhibition. In the former guard room you will find exciting information about
the settlement of the region and archaeological finds from the Nagold Valley. Altensteig owes its first written mention as a town in 1287 to a siege by the Margrave of Baden. The further development of the town is clearly illustrated by the model of the old town in its location and size around 1740.
The museum also presents significant events in the city’s recent history, such as the Nagold floods, which submerged the entire lower town and which
many citizens still vividly remember. Typical Black Forest professions, such as raftsmen, tanners and silversmiths, are presented – both using historical counterparts and medially prepared in a video installation. Altensteig was once an important centre for leather production and leather processing.
The tin figure exhibition is also worth seeing. In around 40 dioramas with 8,000 figures, historical scenes are lovingly recreated in great detail.

    Overall impression
