The Museum Penzberg – Campendonk Collection houses the largest collection of works by Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957) worldwide and includes works of art from all creative phases of the youngest artist in the Blue Rider circle. In 1911, at the age of 21, Campendonk came from the Rhineland to Upper Bavaria at the invitation of Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky. In his search for his own motifs, he was impressed by the mining town of Penzberg with its colonial houses and facilities. Well versed in many working techniques, Campendonk shows an excellent artistic range. In particular, his magically luminous, multi-layered reverse glass paintings are the heart of the museum, which is conducting research into them. In addition to the permanent presentation on Campendonk, the museum focuses on art developments from the end of the 19th century to the present day with high-caliber special exhibitions and events.
In addition, the city's history also plays a role in the museum's listed old building with the original furnished miner's apartment from 1920 and the memorial and information room on the "Penzberg Murder Night" of April 28, 1945.
The museum's twin building, which opened in 2016, is an architectural jewel and an attraction in the cityscape with its vibrant, dark clinker brick façade.
