A museum for all the senses
Gentle dunes, romantic beaches, forests, rustic coastal areas with nature shaped by wind and sea – the Darßer Ort lighthouse is nestled in this multifaceted landscape. Since 1991, the NATUREUM natural history museum has been located in the building and its adjoining buildings. As one of four locations of the German Oceanographic Museum, it uses exhibitions and aquariums to convey the diversity, dynamism and need for protection of nature in a coastal landscape that has been little influenced by humans. The approximately five-kilometer-long car-free route through the Darßwald forest is an impressive experience. By bike, horse-drawn carriage or on foot you can experience “pure nature” on the hiking trails to the NATUREUM. At a height of 30 metres, you will be rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the Baltic Sea and the Darß landscape on the observation platform of the lighthouse, built in 1848. The scent of the forest, the wide view, the sounds of the diverse animal world, the wind on your skin – the NATUREUM and its surroundings offer delightful impressions for all the senses at any time of year. Lighthouse and museum café
The lighthouse, built in 1848, has been accessible again since 1995. After climbing 126 steps to the viewing platform at a height of 30 meters, you are rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the Baltic Sea and the Darß landscape in good weather conditions. On some days, you can even see the Danish islands of Falster and Mön on the horizon.
In 2009, the listed facade of the 35-meter-high "brick giant" was renovated, and its lighthouse is still in operation. On June 8, 2018, the new 45-cent stamp "Darßer Ort" was presented in the NATUREUM, which is part of the lighthouse stamp series.
After the tour, you can visit the museum café at the lighthouse. It is connected to the NATUREUM and reserved for museum guests. There is also a play boat for children in the inner courtyard of the museum area.

Exhibitions and aquariums
In the museum complex, a building that was formerly used as a stable now houses three aquariums with around 20,000 liters of salt water, in which marine animals from the Baltic Sea live. In the former lighthouse keeper's house, there are three floors of exhibitions on the natural area of Darßer Ort, the Baltic coast and the associated coastal dynamics. The recreated scenario "Darß Forest at Night" shows visitors the crepuscular forest dwellers at a glance. The amber cabinet was reopened in June 2016 to mark 25 years of NATUREUM, with interesting facts about the popular beach find.

Darßwald and Weststrand
The approximately five-kilometer-long car-free route through the Darß forest is an impressive experience in itself. By bike, horse-drawn carriage or on foot, you can experience "pure nature" on the hiking trails to the NATUREUM. In the outdoor area of the NATUREUM you will find a wetland biotope, a beach and dune garden and on the way to the nearby Darß West Beach there is a relief table that illustrates the topic of coastal dynamics.

The exhibition “Animal world of the Darß landscape” shows numerous exhibits of forest and water birds as well as mammals of the forest and wetlands. The stuffed sea eagle is particularly impressive in the NATUREUM Darßer Ort.

Arrival on foot:
from Prerow, Born and Wieck on marked hiking trails through the Darßwald. The walk from Prerow takes about 1 hour.
Arriving by bike:
from Prerow, Born and Wieck on solid forest paths.
Arrival by horse-drawn carriage:
from Prerow (approx. 45 minutes)
Arrival with the Darßbahn:
The small Darßbahn travels across the Baltic Sea resort of Prerow with 7 stops from the harbor at the Prerow water hiking rest area, through the town of Prerow into the Vorpommern Boddenlandschaft National Park to our final stop at the Darßer Ort emergency harbor. From there you have access to one of the best hiking trail networks in the Darß.
Arrival by car:
The NATUREUM can only be reached on foot, by bike or carriage. The nearest town is Prerow, which you can reach by car as follows:
From Hamburg/Rostock: A20 to Rostock junction, then continue on the A19 towards Rostock, exit Rostock Ost and continue towards Stralsund or Ribnitz-Damgarten (B105). Shortly before Ribnitz-Damgarten turn left and continue on the L21 towards Prerow/Darß.
From Berlin: A20 towards Stralsund/Lübeck, exit Stralsund/Insel Rügen towards B96 to the Stralsund bypass, then towards Rostock on the B105, turn off at Löbnitz right onto the L23 towards Barth, continue towards Prerow/Darß. Parking spaces can be found in Prerow, Wieck, Born and Ahrenshoop.
