At the southern gate to the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Upper Middle Rhine Valley”, between Bingen and Trechtingshausen, Rheinstein Castle stands in an imposing location on a steep rock as a symbol of Rhine romanticism.
In the lavishly restored complex, which is described as the most beautiful private castle on the Middle Rhine, you can expect valuable stained glass windows, wall and ceiling paintings, antique furniture, armaments, a castle chapel with a crypt and romantic gardens.
The castle restaurant “Kleiner Weinprinz” spoils you with delicious food, wonderful overnight stays in the tower apartment, fairytale weddings and unforgettable celebrations. A small castle shop completes the offer.
The history of the castle goes back to the end of the 13th century.
It was built as a customs castle under the Archbishopric of Mainz and served to secure the Mainz territory in the fight against the robber barons' castles. After its heyday between the 14th and 16th centuries, the castle fell into ruins in the 17th and 18th centuries.
In 1823, Prince Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig of Prussia acquired the well-preserved ruins and had the castle rebuilt in the spirit of the Rhine Romanticism of the 19th century by the master builders J. C. von Lassaulx and Wilhelm Kuhn. This is also where the first romantic castle garden was created on a Middle Rhine castle. Through inheritance, the castle remained in the possession of the Hohenzollern family until 1975. On November 7, 1975, the Hecher family acquired Rheinstein Castle and thus protected this cultural asset from access by the Hare Krishna sect. The Hecher family has also succeeded in awakening the "little castle" Rheinstein from its slumber and turning it into a living cultural monument on the Middle Rhine.
