Description Destination

The Meurin Roman mine is located in the largest Roman underground tuff mining area north of the Alps. The tuff layer, several meters thick, mined here 2,000 years ago, comes from the massive explosion of the Laacher See volcano just 13,000 years ago. As a “lightweight building stone”, tuff was a sought-after building material on ancient and medieval large construction sites in Germany and as far as Denmark. Today the quarry can be visited safely and during daylight hours. Thanks to modern pumice mining, the mine has virtually grown to the surface – flashlights are not necessary. For this purpose, easily accessible walkways, ramps and stairs lead not only through the tunnel system, but also over it. It is probably the only mine that can be viewed from a bird's eye view. A large, cantilevered hall construction protects against sun and rain.
In the outdoor Ancient Technology World, 13 stations and workshops convey the amazing technical achievements that were already available to the Romans to equip even palaces. The reconstructed antique construction crane shows how, thanks to sophisticated lifting techniques, loads weighing several tons can be moved effortlessly. Imposing columns were created on the stone lathe and marble slabs were cut mechanically using the water-powered stone saw. In addition to work, it is also about living conditions, because those who work also have to eat. Various grain mills, a dough kneading machine, a Roman kitchen and a large baking oven show how the food supply was ensured.
