The Sigmund Thun Gorge is a refreshing excursion destination for the whole family and an exciting journey through time and knowledge in Kaprun.
263 steps lead through the 320-meter-long gorge and the roaring torrent is crossed via the well-secured wooden structure. Once at the top, visitors are greeted by the idyllic natural paradise of the Klammsee with a children's playground, refreshment stop and the breathtaking viewpoint on the Bürgkogel.

The history of the Sigmund Thun Gorge is closely linked to the Bürgkogel in Kaprun. The first Bronze Age settlements were here around 4,000 years ago, and in the Middle Ages an extensive fortification was built, which gave the hill its name. Some parts of the castle wall have since been uncovered, and further finds from Celtic and Roman times can be admired in various Salzburg museums. The new Bürgkogelsteig adds another attraction to the hike through the Sigmund Thun Gorge with the Klammsee. Hikers and mountain enthusiasts appreciate the challenging climb with a fantastic view over the entire Kaprun valley with the lake, Limberg Dam and the Tauern.
The Bürgkogelsteig is of course open in the warmer months. Good footwear and some mountain experience are a must.
