Description Destination

The Apple Road winds its way for around 25 km from Prebuch near Gleisdorf to the apple village of Puch and Oberfeistritz near Anger. On the way you will meet 30 fruit farmers who, as direct marketers, offer all the delicacies made from fruit. These can be a wide variety of juices, must in all varieties, but also jams, nectars, fruit liqueurs and, above all, a variety of fine spirits. First and foremost is the “Abacus”, which 23 “apple men” distill in a strict ritual from the best apple variety of the year under the strictest secrecy in a cloister. A dozen restaurants know how to refine the “apple raw materials” into delicious dishes. Classic dishes such as apple strudel are offered as well as sophisticated desserts. Entire menu sequences – from cider soup and cider roast to apple dumplings and apple ice cream enchant connoisseurs and gourmets. From the blossoming spring to the bathing experience to famous sights and the harvest season, the region has a lot to offer.
On the last Sunday in April, the traditional “Apple Blossom Festival” takes place in the apple village of Puch.
An incredible floral splendor bathes the region in a white and pink dress. The first apples are harvested in August and the last ones only at the end of October. In the middle of it all (3rd Sunday in September) the apple farmers celebrate the Apple Road Adventure Tour. A festival with thousands of visitors. At all stations you will not only find fresh fruit and the best products of the new harvest, but also music, culture and plenty of entertainment. For 30 years, the balloon ride has proven to be the absolute highlight of every ApfelLand trip. The region can probably be described as the Mecca of Austrian ballooning.

Apple Museum "House of the Apple"

Since 1990, the Styrian fruit growing museum, the "House of the Apple", has been located on the Kelz family estate in Harl in the middle of apple country. The largest showpiece of our museum, a stately weather tower, greets you right at the entrance. In the outdoor area you will find a described orchard with old varieties, display boards with pests and beneficial organisms, a bee house with a display beehive and a press house with the abacus cellar, where the world's best apple schnapps, the mystical "abacus", is stored.
Inside there is a permanent display collection where you can learn a lot of interesting facts about apples and fruit growing in general. The great importance of the apple in art, mythology, religion and customs is highlighted, as are plant protection, hail protection, processing, marketing, transport and harvesting. The museum presents "The Apple Through the Ages", from the Neolithic period (Stone Age) to the 20th century. The first prehistoric apple finds are described, as are traditions from the Roman period up to the migration of peoples. Speaking of the Roman period: In the Pucher church wall there is a stone with a picture of a woman holding an apple. This is the first historical evidence of apple cultivation in this region. Topics such as "development, storage and sorting" are also covered.
