Description Destination

In the historic town center of Lahr is the remains of a Geroldseck castle built around 1220, which became the nucleus of the Lahr settlement. Part of the outer wall of the palace (residential building) of the castle and a corner tower have been preserved. This tower, now known as the "Stork Tower," is one of four round corner towers of the fort.

In 1278, the settlement that had formed in front of the castle was granted town rights. After being destroyed in the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle was acquired by the city in the second half of the 18th century and demolished. The Stork Tower served as a prison until 1861 and was therefore preserved.

Numerous stonemason's marks can still be seen on the rusticated blocks of the outer wall. The windows on the north and east walls still indicate the castle's former palace.

    Directions

    By train and bus:
The Rhine Valley Railway with a stop in Lahr and an ICE stop in Offenburg is one of the most important European north-south connections. Information about travelling by train is available from the railway travel information service. The city bus runs regularly from Lahr train station to the city center.
Bus 103, 104, 105, 106 or 108 to the stop "Goethestraße" or "Lammstraße"
    From Goethestrasse to the museum:
Walk against the direction of traffic until you reach the roundabout and turn left there.
At the church turn left again into Schillerstraße. Then turn into the first street on the right (Kreuzstraße).
Now walk straight towards the museum. The entrance is in the side street.
The Storchentur is located just a few meters from the clay oven factory.
To do this, follow Kreuzstraße (between the museum and Biermichel) to the next intersection.
The Stork Tower is on the left.
    From Lammstrasse to the museum:
After a few meters, turn right into the city center.
Follow the road and turn right again at the first opportunity.
Now we go straight ahead, past a playground and under a small passage and
to a large square (Schloßplatz with dm and Müller). Continuing straight ahead you will already see the museum on
the left side. The entrance is in the side street.
The Stork Tower is located just a few meters from the clay oven factory. To do this, follow the side street
(Kreuzstraße between Museum and Biermichel) to the next intersection.
The Stork Tower is on the left.
For the return journey, we recommend departing from the "Rathausplatz" stop, just three minutes from the museum.
    By car:
The A5 motorway and the B3 and B36/B415 federal highways provide access to Lahr for long-distance traffic. Follow the signs to Lahr city center. Around 1,600 public parking spaces and several hundred customer parking spaces are available in the city center. Our parking flyer, which shows all parking options, provides additional orientation to the parking guidance system.
