Description Destination

A smiling face on a magnificent garment fastener from the 6th century AD welcomes visitors to the newly designed Bavarian Museum in Waging. It is located on a so-called “iron fibula”, a garment fastener made of gold-plated silver that only the wealthiest ladies of the 6th century could afford. The goldsmiths were able to demonstrate their great ingenuity on these pieces of jewellery - in addition to the smiling face, numerous other details can be seen on the brooch: a second pair of eyes, a large animal head, eagle beaks, ribbed snake bodies, wide-open animal mouths. The meaning of what is depicted must remain a mystery, since we have hardly any written sources from this period. However, this “smiley” is probably a depiction of Christ, a Christ who smiles kindly in the midst of chaos – symbolized by the wild animal world. By the middle of the 6th century at the latest, the Bavarians were officially Christian-Catholic. Even if we do not know how the faith was actually practiced, depictions such as those on this piece of jewelry testify to the existence of Christianity.
The focus of the rest of the exhibition is a Bavarian "family", woman, man, boy and girl. Their grave goods give visitors an insight into the world of the first Wagingers in the Early Middle Ages.
