Description Destination
Weltenburg Monastery is located at the entrance to the romantic Danube Gorge. It was founded by the Irish-Scottish-Columban wandering monks Eustasius and Agilus from Luxeuil (Burgundy) around the year 600 and is thus the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria.
The abbey church, built and decorated by the Asam brothers between 1716 and 1739 under the then abbot Maurus Bächl (1713–1743), is one of the masterpieces of European Baroque. In 1803 Weltenburg fell victim to secularization and was dissolved. However, it was rebuilt as a priory in 1842 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and settled by monks from Metten. Since 1913 Weltenburg has been an abbey again.
The community sees its main task in pastoral care (looking after two parishes) and in welcoming guests. The St. Georg guest house serves this purpose and offers accommodation for around 100 people. We are also involved in adult education. Please read our course program. In addition, retreats and days of reflection are offered. Another pastoral task is to convey the message of the Christian faith through architecture and art to the numerous tourists (500,000 per year) during church tours. The monastery brewery and the monastery tavern ensure the physical well-being of the tourists. The brewery has been leased since 1973. The monastery also has an agricultural business.

The nearest train station for travelers coming from Ingolstadt is Abensberg station.
Since there is no regular bus service, we recommend taking a taxi to the monastery. Taxi companies are Taxi Eisler 09443 3788 or Taxi Schierlinger 09443 928908. The cost for the approximately 12 km route is approximately € 20.00.
For travelers coming from Regensburg, we recommend the Saal an der Donau train station. From here you can use the regular bus service to Kelheim. In Kelheim, lines 5 and 10 of the VLK Kelheim provide a connection to Weltenburg. From mid-March to the end of October you can also use the boat connection to the monastery from Kelheim (please note the timetables!). A convenient way to continue your journey is with MH-Kelheim-Taxi GmbH (telephone: 09441 7036690) or Koc 09441 5252. The cost for the approximately 12 km route is approximately € 20.00.
