Description Destination

The slate roofs of Mayen can be seen from the castle's Golo Tower. On the horizon, the volcanoes herald completely different times, when the forces of nature gave the Eifel its final face. For 7,000 years, humans have been hiding a special "treasure" in the lava flows; valuable stones that would go down in history from now on.
Millstones made of volcanic basalt lava were sent from here into the wider world. What remains is the mining field, a bizarre mining landscape of quarries and mines, where you can now find the LAPIDEA sculpture park.
The exhibition "Stone Ages" in the Grubenfeld Adventure Worlds tells of the hard work. Here you can become a stone worker yourself. The extraction of the volcanic stone dates back to Roman times. The workplaces located at the quarries and the workshop show the diverse work steps.
But the Grubenfeld adventure worlds are even more - they are one of several stations in the volcano park. The volcano park is presented in the access area and with detailed information in the entrance area on the way to the exhibition in the neighboring building.
