Description Destination
The Rieck House is one of the oldest surviving farmhouses in northern Germany. Dating back to 1533 and named after the Rieck farming family, three generations of farmers, maids and farmhands as well as cattle, horses and chickens lived here under one roof. Visitors of all ages can find out what it was like in the open-air museum's permanent exhibition. The house reflects the original state of several centuries, as it was farmed from the 16th century to the 1980s. Today, a bilingual permanent exhibition shows the cultural history of the Vier- and Marschlande. Visitors explore the house using the High and Low German texts, films and audio stations. They can climb into an alcove themselves, lift a filled milk can, milk the practice udder or smell herbs. In addition to the farmhouse, the open-air museum also includes a scoop mill, granary, show garden, bakery, pigsty and a small playground.
