Description Destination
Climb aboard and enjoy the ride along Lake Baldeney in the historic passenger carriages of the Hespertalbahn. The museum train takes you from Essen-Kupferdreh to Haus Scheppen, a former fiefdom of the Werden Abbey.
In today's local recreation area, it is hard to imagine that there were once mines here that gave work to many hundreds of people, a cement factory that turned the trees grey and a steelworks that produced steel.
The only living monument to industrial history that has survived here is the Hespertal Railway. Its origins as a standard gauge railway with steam locomotives date back to 1877. In addition to the transport of ore and lime, the main task of the railway was the transport of coal and waste. Since 1927, there has even been a separate passenger transport service for the mine workforce.
With the closure of the local Pörtingssiepen mine in 1973, the railway was no longer needed. Two years later, dedicated railway enthusiasts founded the association to save this industrial monument. Since then, the current museum railway has been maintained by the Hespertalbahn e.V. and operated with steam and diesel locomotives.
Visit the Hespertalbahn and experience the old technology up close. The round trip takes about an hour. You are welcome to interrupt the journey to take a walk around Lake Baldeney or the old mining site and then take a later train to return.
