Description Destination
The forefather of Graubünden's climbing gardens: verticalists have been romping about in the former quarry in Haldenstein since the 1950s.
The Haldenstein climbing garden is considered the first climbing garden in Switzerland. It was an ideal “playground” for the Chur climbing scene as early as the 1950s. Thanks to a major renovation project in 2012/13, many routes are now better secured and marked, and a new information board with an overview of the routes has been created.
Located directly on the Rhine, the climbing garden can be divided into 3 sectors: On the far right, short beginner routes in grades 3 - 5 (top rope can be attached from above). In the middle there are partly slimmed down slab tours up to 3 rope lengths long in grades 5 to 7. The most beautiful, longer climbs such as the "Plattenwand" are in the left part. Many routes are well secured and marked. Climbing is not recommended in summer heat or strong foehn winds, but climbing is possible on sunny days in winter too.
The route network is somewhat confusing in places, so careful study of the topo and a keen sense of smell are an advantage. The area is child-friendly and easily accessible with only a 2-minute walk.
