Description Destination
The Mayen mining area is one of the oldest and most important mining sites for basalt lava. The porous stone is ideal for grain graters and millstones, especially the local one. In Roman times, the grain mills from Mayen were real export hits due to their special quality. They worked so effectively that they even rose to the rank of “essential war equipment” because the Romans could use them to supply large troop units with relatively little effort.
The bizarre, 7,000-year-old quarry is now a nature reserve and is home to countless bats. An informative walking path takes you through the middle of the site to original sites of mining history. The modern hands-on exhibition “Stone Times” gives you practical insights into the working methods of the stone breakers and interesting insights into their world.
The Grubenfeld adventure worlds are part of the Osteifel Volcano Park and are part of a volcanic industrial area, which also includes the Meurin Roman mine and the Katzenberg Roman observatory. Why not go there sometime?
