The city of Salzburg is a special destination in Austria – especially for families from all over the world.
The UNESCO-protected Salzburg Marionette Theatre should not be missed on any family outing!
Children and adults alike cannot resist the magic of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre employs around 10 puppeteers, who could not be more differently trained. But they all have one thing in common: musicality, craftsmanship and the ability to empathize with the different characters of the puppets. In addition to the company's own tailor shop, where the puppets are costumed, there is a carpentry and metalworking shop for building the scenery and stage sets. This collaboration allows between 20 and 90 puppets to appear in each piece.
The Salzburg Marionette Theatre developed its own playing technique, which has been used as a model by marionette theatres all over the world. The performance practice of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre has been selected by UNESCO as a cultural asset worthy of preservation as the “most highly developed form of puppet and figure theatre”.
The HIGHLIGHTS program is an entertaining introduction to the magical world of puppets. It is a 30-minute best-of from “The Magic Flute” and “The Sound of Music”, supplemented by projections and information about the theater. Both productions are also on the program in their full length. The global success musical “The Sound of Music” is absolutely worth seeing and popular not only with international guests. The story of the Salzburg von Trapp family with their seven children and their musical teacher Maria is told in a lively manner and with many well-known melodies. The repertoire is supplemented by pieces for children in the afternoons.
