Description Destination
If you want to discover the world-unique Wadden Sea natural area, you should start your journey at the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Center on Wilhelmshaven's south beach, the nature experience center on the Jade Bay. On four elaborately designed floors, you will be guided through the unique water, land and air worlds of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.
The thematic structure of the new permanent exhibition was aligned with the floors of the old torpedo warehouse. Starting in the whale exhibition on the ground floor - the focus is on the 14 m long original skeleton of a sperm whale with the whale organs plastinated by Gunther von Hagens - you can first dive into the mysterious depths of the sea, then conquer the "Wadden Sea" habitat and above it the sky, the world of migratory birds.
Many interactive media, films, audio stations and games invite you to immerse yourself in the unique natural landscape in front of and behind the dike, and with a microscope you can take a close look at the mudflats.
For coastal residents, the Wadden Sea is an indispensable part of their lives. From geology to cultural history, display boards, films and audio stations tell exciting stories about the formation of the Jade Bay and stop at buoys and barrels to provide insights into the centuries-long struggle of people against the stormy rage of the “Blanken Hans”. The exhibition unit “Dike Construction” is a particularly important area for coastal protection and is dedicated to the arduous struggle for land areas previously lost to the sea.
Current issues, such as the increasing pollution of our oceans, the visible and tangible climate change and the associated rise in sea levels, clearly demonstrate the need for action by each and every individual.
A special attraction, not only for children, is the exhibited original shrimp boat “Daggi”, on whose deck not only sailors’ hearts beat faster.
In Wilhelmshaven and the surrounding area, the Wadden Sea is particularly diverse! You can walk with us over the seabed on a south beach excursion or take part in one of our nature experience events, such as the popular seal cruises with show fishing on the “Harle Kurier”.
A special highlight: Wilhelmshaven's south coast has become the stage for a unique natural spectacle for several years! Porpoises come to the Jade Bay in spring and every year in April the Wilhelmshaven Porpoise Days take place, with numerous nature experience events, activities and presentations about Germany's only native whale species.
