Description Destination
Since 1968, the city of Bleiburg has dedicated a monographic museum to the painter Werner Berg (1904-1981). The representative house on Bleiburg’s main square has since become a magnet for art lovers from all over the world. It shows the oeuvre of the artist, whose artistic starting point was German Expressionism, in a unique interaction of art and environment in the core area of his origins.
Werner Berg, born in 1904 in Elberfeld (Wuppertal), moved in 1931, after completing his studies in political science and attending the academies in Vienna and Munich, to a remote mountain farm in the southeast of Carinthia, where he worked as a farmer and painter until his death in 1981. The central theme of his work is the landscape and people of his adopted home of Lower Carinthia - observed with the distance of the stranger and the intensity of the lover. With his work, the state of Carinthia has created a unique document. Of high artistic quality, it also bears witness to life in a pre-industrial culture to which the artist was continually exposed and which is now a thing of the past.
In the annually changing special exhibitions, an attempt is always made to find a thematic dialogue between Werner Berg's work and the respective special exhibition.
Werner Berg’s art can thus be experienced from ever new perspectives, even by repeat visitors. This shows how his work remains relevant even in the face of various issues of our time.
