In the "bucklige (hilly) world" of the south-western Eichsfeld, the town of Mackenrode offers a charming picture: beneath the heights of the Katzenstein and the Brandholz - in the middle of a scenically impressive area, often referred to as "Eichsfeld Switzerland" - rests the settlement with its architecturally remarkable church, with numerous half-timbered houses and a much-acclaimed fairytale park in the valley of the babbling, small stream of the Beek.
Mackenrode for fairy tale lovers
Since 2009, a fairy tale park has attracted fairy tale fans of all ages to the village of Mackenrode, which has a population of 265. After entering the park through the large gate, you will come across depictions of the fairy tales “Hansel and Gretel”, “The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats”, “The Frog Prince” and many more. From a viewing hill you have a magical view of the village and its unique half-timbered church. In the center of the park there is a large oven that can be heated up and used to prepare fragrant dishes such as bread, cakes or flatbread.
The children can also let off steam on a nearby playground. Right next door is the inn “Am Brandholz”, which of course is also waiting for a visit.
The entrances are barrier-free. The children can play and run undisturbed, as there is no main road separating the fairy tale park from the playground or guest house.
The legendary “Kronenmühle” also belongs to the municipality of Mackenrode. It is almost 500 years old and still produces flour today. A legend tells how the mill got its name: “The owner of the mill once ploughed near the mill. Suddenly he came across a hard object, he looked, and behold, a shining, precious crown appeared. He had barely grabbed the crown when an ugly snake emerged from the hole in the ground. Horrified, the miller swung himself onto his fearfully snorting horse and fled towards the mill, pursued by the hissing monster. Luckily he reached the courtyard gate, which he quickly slammed behind him, smashing the angry snake's head. But he held the crown in high esteem.”
