Description Destination
Nestled in the ‘Bremen Switzerland’, the enchanting moated castle is the last remaining noble residence in Bremen and houses the Schönebeck Castle Museum of Local History. Walking paths lead into the green surroundings and through the picturesque valley of the Aue to the historic port of Vegesack.
First mentioned in documents in 1357 as a castle complex, built around 1640 in the Baroque style and owned by the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen since 1950: Schönebeck Castle is one of the most important architectural monuments in the north of Bremen. In 1972, the “Home and Museum Association for Vegesack and Surrounding Areas” set up its museum here, which had existed since 1911.
The focus of the museum's collection, which is largely owned by the association, is on the maritime history of Vegesack, from historical whaling to the nearby shipyards along the Weser. With a history spanning almost four hundred years, Vegesack Harbour is the oldest artificial harbour in Germany and has shaped the region’s fortunes for several centuries.
Beyond the era of sailing and steamship travel from Vegesack into the world, of the African traveller Gerhard Rohlfs and the South Sea captain Eduard Dallmann, the museum shows the beginnings of the region's industrial development using the example of ceramics production and rope factories, the beginning of the rescue of shipwrecked people and the Vegesack herring fishery. The depiction of middle-class living conditions in the 19th century rounds off the museum’s permanent exhibition.
Several changing special exhibitions throughout the year, occasional concerts and the opportunity to celebrate weddings in a stylish setting complement the museum's extensive permanent exhibition. The current program can be viewed at:
