Description Destination

In the idyllic valley of the Inn against the panorama of the Alps, located on the grounds of a medieval monastery, the MUZEUM SUSCH has opened its doors since January 2, 2019: a new addition to the variety of experimental places for art that seek and create references in the picturesque landscape of the Engadin.
The ensemble, consisting of the former rectory, as well as the reception and commercial buildings, was part of a rural monastery that was built in 1157 on the Flüela Pass and thus on the pilgrimage route to Rome and Santiago de Compostela, and was supplemented by a brewery in the 19th century. For the museum, these existing structures were carefully restored and expanded with new extensions to create an inspiring complex for artistic production and communication, which invites visitors to take instructive tours and offers space for exhibitions and experimental forms of presentation, performances, conferences, lectures and events as well as an interdisciplinary studio program.
MUZEUM SUSCH is a place for the discursive and exploratory character of art in the tradition of the art gallery as a field of experimentation. Founded by Grażyna Kulczyk, it is specifically (but not exclusively) characterized by a deep understanding of the position of women artists and is committed to the search for matrilineal connections in art and the emotional understanding of often excluded, overlooked or misinterpreted positions. The museum aims to contribute to the recognition and greater visibility of these positions, which have also shaped Grażyna Kulczyk's art collection with its focus on conceptual and feminist art as well as art from Eastern and Central Europe. This aspect has so far been underrepresented in the museum landscape in reunified Europe, and one of the central qualities of the museum is to redefine the canonical as well as the marginalized - not with a single, dominant voice that forces the traditional into silence, but as a multi-voiced, influential force that gives resonance to other voices.
Simultaneously a place of contemplation, research and intervention, MUZEUM SUSCH is defined by a series of permanent, site-specific installations by international contemporary artists who engage with the architecture and idiosyncratic structure of the site. Each of these artworks plays a distinct role in shaping the evolving character of the institution and the distinctive layout of the facility, particularly in dialogue with the works of temporary exhibitions that will occupy the majority of the building.
One of the earliest site-specific installations at MUZEUM SUSCH is a 14m high steel structure that rises as the spine of the building in the former ice tower of the brewery - Monika Sosnowska's ‘Stairs’ (2017). Mirosław Bałka, Jarosław Kozłowski, Sara Masüger and Adrian Villar Rojas have created new installations on site, while groundbreaking works by Magdalena Abakanowicz, Heidi Bucher, Zofia Kulik, Paulina Ołowska, Piotr Uklański and Joanna Rajkowska have found a permanent home in spaces specifically arranged for them. In the future, the list of permanent installations in the MUZEUM SUSCH will be expanded.
