The new Kunst.Stoff department of the Textile Museum is dedicated to the particularly luxurious area of fine fabrics. Such precious fabrics made of velvet and silk have always been considered luxury goods. Their task was to stage their wearers in such a way that their outstanding importance was obvious. In castles, palaces and churches, elaborately patterned textiles were among the most expensive furnishings. The Art Fabrics department offers silk fabrics and velvets with lavish decorations from the 17th to the 19th century. There are also festive vestments and a magnificent Renaissance smoking cloak to illustrate how such fabrics were processed.
In the Fashion.Art.Crafts department you will find magnificent robes, dresses for everyday wear and parties, daring dresses from the exciting 1920s and the flashy outfits of the 1970s. In addition to fashion, fashionable accessories are also on display, such as a large number of precious fans made of ivory, mother-of-pearl, wood or lace, which tell stories from courtly life in the finest paintings. Some rooms present the incredible achievements in the field of embroidery and lace. Inextricable ornaments in white and gold embroidery cover fabrics in intricate shapes, making it a real feast for the eyes to immerse yourself in these rich decorations. In addition, the fine webs of lace captivate the viewer. Finally, in the festive salon, precious tapestries offer insights into biblical and mythical worlds.
