Description Destination
The Griffen stalactite cave is located within the castle hill, the entrance is in the center of Griffen. It was discovered in the last months of World War II and opened to visitors in 1956. The stalactites and stalagmites were declared a natural monument in 1957. Various bone finds prove the existence of long-extinct animals such as the cave bear, giant deer or woolly rhinoceros. The discovery of two fireplaces inside the cave proved that the area is one of the oldest human settlements in Carinthia. On the mountain there are remains of a refuge castle.
