The state capital’s zoo is nestled between Schwerin’s lakes. As a modern species conservation zoo, Schwerin Zoo is home to many rare and endangered animal species. In natural settings, visitors can see the David's deer, which is extinct in the wild, but other endangered species can also be observed. These include the southern white rhinoceros and the giant anteater, the only representatives of their species in the far north. In the middle of the zoo there is a large pond complex that is not only home to Cuban flamingos and pink pelicans, but is also a hotspot for local biodiversity.
With the South American Humboldt House and the rhino savannah covering more than 8,000 square meters, the zoo has created modern visitor highlights. In 2021, the Red List Center was inaugurated, which also marks the new starting point in the zoo. Here, visitors are introduced to the IUCN Red List and given an explanation of different species. In addition to Asiatic lions, Rothschild giraffes and yellow-backed duikers, very small species can also be discovered.
Schwerin's smallest hotel is available to visitors on site. Up to six people can find space in the cozy tree house and can observe the wild shared apartment life amidst peccaries, coatis and striped capuchins. You can also get married at Schwerin Zoo. For those who are wildly in love, the Red List Center and the African Hut become wedding locations with an individually coordinated program.
