Description Destination
The Alternative Wolf and Bear Park Black Forest, built in 2010, is located in the idyllic Wolf Valley in Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach, on the edge of the Black Forest National Park. It calls itself “alternative” because the animals living here come from poor, inhumane conditions. Here, nine brown bears, six European wolves and two Eurasian lynxes currently find a new, natural home on 10 hectares of forest area (as of August 7, 2020).
The park's residents, who often exhibit behavioral problems, have access to a natural habitat within the fenced-in outdoor areas that is largely unaffected by humans. Here, often for the first time in their lives, the animals have the opportunity to pursue their natural needs. The socialization of bears among themselves and with wolves or lynx helps them to discover their natural behavioral patterns so that they gradually overcome their disturbances.
With over 80,000 visitors per year, the park is not only a tourist highlight of the region, but also contributes to a better understanding of the three large predators and the need for animal, nature and species protection with its numerous guided tours, adventure and educational programs.
