The Basilica of Saint Michael in Mondsee -
a special art treasure near Salzburg

In 748, Duke Odilo II of Bavaria founded the Mondsee monastery. It received generous donations and later became an imperial monastery. In the 9th century it came under the rule of the Regensburg bishops. Saint Wolfgang stayed there and the pilgrimage site of St. Wolfgang was created. In the Middle Ages, the monastery experienced a heyday with the construction of a Romanesque church and later a late Gothic church. It belonged to Bavaria-Landshut and then passed to Austria. In the 15th century there was another heyday with extensive building projects. Various altars were created. The church was later renovated and elevated to a minor basilica in 2005. The church interior is impressive and also houses the former treasury, the prayer choir and the monastery library, which are now part of the Mondseeland Museum.
