The trade route across the Alps once led right through Mauterndorf Castle: it was an important toll station and gave the town its name. Today, the castle experience delights visitors of all ages with numerous playful stations, re-enactments of scenes from the time of Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and the over 700-year-old defensive tower, which can be visited as part of guided tours.

    The town of Mauterndorf can be reached via the Tauern Autobahn (A 10), exit St. Michael. Then continue on the B 99 to Mauterndorf.
    Attention! A vignette is required for all motorways in Austria, and a motorway toll must also be paid for the Tauern Tunnel (between Flachauwinkel-Süd and Zederhaus) coming from the north and for the Katschberg Tunnel (between Rennweg and St. Michael) coming from the south. There is sufficient free parking for coaches.
