Aggstein Castle sits 300m above the Danube and has shaped the landscape ever since with its mighty defensive walls, built in the 12th century.
With its breathtaking views of the Danube valley and its impressive history, the castle ruins are among the top excursion destinations in Lower Austria.
Adventures for young and old
In the outdoor escape room, the "spirit of the ruin" sends teams of players on exciting missions through courtyards, towers and hidden corners. Working together to puzzle, combine and discover – team spirit, brains and a dose of courage are what count here. Historical figures such as robber knight Hademar, the sinister Jörg Scheck, or the healer Anna von Pollheim want to be freed from their curse. For puzzle experts, there is also a particularly "spooky" challenge: "Konrad and the Curse of Aggstein".
NEW from 2026: The Adventure Quest “The Seals of Aggstein” combines an easy hike from Maria Langegg with a modern scavenger hunt to the castle – solve puzzles, find clues along the way and a small surprise awaits you at the castle at the end.
After the tour, the tavern beckons you to stop in.
Events: During the market days in September, the castle transforms into a lively setting full of stalls, regional cuisine and Wachau tradition. The legendary castle advent is both the season finale and the highlight of the year! Exquisite handicrafts with a medieval flair have been delighting customers for over 15 years.
