Castle Ruins Obervoitsberg Voitsberg The castle ruins Obervoitsberg are one of the most beautiful event locations in the Lipizzaner homeland. Whether you attend a concert, theater or culinary festival, it will always be an experience and create lasting memories. History:The history of the castle dates back to the year 1164, when it was built on the site of the Styrian sovereign Ottokar IV on the orders of the monastery of St. Lambrecht. The first documented mention of the castle's name was in 1183. Obervoitsberg was owned by several larger noble families, including the Babenbergs at the beginning, who also expanded the complex. From the 12th or 13th century onwards, Obervoitsberg was the seat of a regional court and the centre of a princely office. It is unclear whether the complex was conquered during a Hungarian invasion in the 15th century. From the 18th century onwards, the castle was considered dilapidated and was finally abandoned after a lightning strike in 1798. In 1802, parts of the castle were demolished and the well was filled in. At the end of the 19th century, the Graz-Köflach Railway and Mining Company had the ruins restored and in 1910 donated them to the municipality of Voitsberg, in whose possession they still remain. The house castle has a clearly structured, rectangular floor plan. A keep is missing and has been replaced by a fortified house for defensive and residential purposes, which closes off the complex to the south. There was probably once a tower in the northern part of the castle. There were probably two buildings in the east and west of the complex, which are only indicated by beam holes in the castle wall, and at least one of which served as a palace. In the northeast, the castle was closed off by a residential tower-like building, probably the oldest part of the complex. Originally, the access to the north was via a drawbridge over a moat that no longer exists. This was walled up in the 15th century and replaced by a new entrance to the west. The water supply came from a cistern that received water from the Tregistberg. Since 1960, Obervoitsberg has served as a stage for the Burghofspiele Voitsberg. When the ruins were converted into an open-air stage, parts of the old building structure were destroyed. The castle complex is the ruin of a hilltop castle that was built on a broad ridge in the north of the city of Voitsberg and was formerly part of the city fortifications. Today: There is a lot to discover around the Obervoitsberg castle ruins: the Schlossbergsteig, the West Styrian Sagenberg, the Archduke Johann Naschgarten, an archery course and the energy adventure park.
