Day by day, we are making progress towards building a monastery with the tools and materials of the early Middle Ages, just as the monks of the island of Reichenau drew it 1200 years ago in the “St. Gallen Monastery Plan”. “Campus Galli” is a unique project to make the time of Charlemagne visible and tangible!
“Campus Galli” is both an open-air museum and a research project. The daily, manual engagement with the Middle Ages constantly raises new questions: What did an early medieval barn look like, how did people split shingles and how did they mix mortar? How much wood does a medieval pottery kiln need and what types of vegetables did we already have? Every day brings new challenges, every day is a little different in the monastery town “Campus Galli” near Meßkirch, the unique medieval construction site between the Danube and Lake Constance.
After more than five years, the Middle Ages have become everyday life for the craftsmen. This year, many long beams are needed to build a large barn, each one made by hand from an oak or spruce trunk. It is set to be the largest building on the medieval construction site to date.
