Description Destination

The large special exhibition “Circus – The Changing World of Sensations” in the Museum and Gallery of the City of Schwabmünchen, the MUGS, presents around 800 exhibits on the history of the circus. Many of the loans are on public display for the first time.
The cultural history of the circus is about risk-taking people, their ingenuity and entrepreneurship, about courageous loners and family dynasties, about daring artists and sensational programs. The visitors wander in broad strokes through the cultural history of the circus world.
As they walk through the exhibition, visitors get to know some of the great circuses and their history in more detail, presented through suitcases, props and acrobat accessories. The dazzling costumes of the white clowns are overwhelmingly beautiful. The original clown shoes, on the other hand, are huge and really heavy, and the cleverly equipped musical instruments, such as an exploding piano, are inventive. At MUGS you can also meet a life-size elephant and come face to face with Charlie Chaplin. The audience can also try out historical mutoscopes, i.e. flip book devices, and stereoscopes.
