Description Destination
The topic of smuggling is particularly suitable for a hiking and mountain experience in the area from Maloja to the adjacent Val Malenco, Italy, as it has a very concrete historical connection in the region. For one and a half centuries, from the beginning of the 19th century until well into the 20th century, smuggling was an important source of income for the population, especially in the Bergell and Engadin. A wide range of goods were smuggled, especially food and luxury items, which made it possible to do good business and make life in the previously very barren mountain valleys more pleasant.
The "Percorso dei Contrabbandieri - Capel, Maloja" extends over a 1 ½ hour hike from Maloja towards the south. Through an enchanted larch forest you reach the Lägh da Bitabergh, where the smugglers' path ends and the mountain lake idyll invites you to rest and linger. Along the way, 17 stations provide exciting insights into the life and work of the smugglers. In the search for the hidden smuggled goods, you learn to locate yourself in nature, to orient yourself using the cardinal direction and/or the position of the sun, combined with lots of exercise, games and fun in the mountains. The posts are filled with interesting facts about the smuggler's life and provide anecdotes from the smugglers' lives. They also provide "vital survival" information, such as first aid recipes from the great outdoors.
