Description Destination

We have 300 years of hat history(s) for you to touch and try on.
We invite visitors, both big and small, to an exciting trip into the fabulous world of hats. Our museum is located in the former Ottmar Reich hat factory, which used to be the largest hat factory in Germany. Millions of hats made of straw and felt were made in Lindenberg; hat production made the town very rich. There were over 30 factories here, employing many thousands of people.
Children also worked; they had to weave straw or work as errand boys in the factories. Later, many of the boys worked on the large hat presses. In the museum you can test whether you have enough strength for it. It takes over 70 steps to make a felt hat. We show how it is done and what shark skin has to do with it.
But there is even more to discover and try out: you can touch different materials and try straw weaving yourself. And the best way to find out which hat fits which head is to go to our small hat salon, where 100 hats are waiting for you to try on. You can also take a family photo with hats.
The hat used to be an indispensable item of clothing for men, women and children: leaving the house without a hat was as unthinkable as going out on the street without shoes!
Our public family tour takes place every second Sunday of the month. There is also a free WhatsApp tour and a museum quiz.
A hat museum of this type and size is unique in Bavaria and even in Germany. And after visiting Lindenberg, everyone will definitely be happy to put on a cap or a sun hat. Because: “Hat feels good!”
