The Roßlochklamm adventure trail is located not far from Mürzsteg – in the middle of the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park. Awarded as “Austria’s Most Creative Nature Trail” in 2008 and “Theme Trail of the Year 2014”, this adventure trail vividly illustrates the cycle of life in a humorous way and conveys biological connections.
For nature lovers away from the mainstream, the narrowness of the Roßlochklamm offers wild romance and impressive nature experiences through the water-filled forest ditches with lots of dead wood and natural forest vegetation.
This landscape conservation area has long been used for forestry purposes by the Austrian Federal Forests. In the past, the wood was transported out of the gorge with the help of horses and sleighs on paths that are still partly recognizable today. In the hillside and ravine forests, sycamore maple and common ash can be found occasionally. Otherwise, common beech, silver fir and spruce predominate. Benefiting from high rainfall, dense herbs grow along the stream and the protected hart's tongue fern thrives on steep slopes. The endangered lung lichen only grows on old trees and is an indicator of "clean air".
