The Rankweiler Open Air Museum displays three buildings of the Roman estate, which was inhabited from the 1st to the 5th century AD. In the first half of the 1st century AD, Roman settlers built an agricultural estate consisting of several buildings on a debris cone of the Frutz river in the middle of the Bresner Weitried. So far, three buildings have been archaeologically examined.
The building in the northern part of the complex, discovered in 1996 and researched between 2002 and 2007, served as a residential building from the 2nd century AD at the latest and can be described as the main building of the entire property. The second building, located further south, known for decades as the “Roman Villa Open-Air Museum”, also served for residential purposes. The basic structure of this building was already constructed in the 2nd century AD, but it probably only took on the function of the main house in the 4th century, at a time when the estate was experiencing a real heyday. Equipment and weapons found indicate that state-military aspects were one of the reasons for this prosperous period.
To the east, 200 metres from these two buildings, lies the Roman bathhouse belonging to the property, which particularly illustrates the comfort of the Roman estate in Brederis. The building was discovered in 2006 during excavation work on the site of today's golf course and was archaeologically examined.
In the immediate vicinity of these three buildings, other objects are suspected, such as cattle stables or storage rooms for crops. The date of the abandonment of the estate cannot be dated exactly, but it is likely to have been in the late 5th century AD.
