Description Destination
The castle complex from the late Middle Ages once guarded the way to the Jaufen Pass. The oldest part, the free-standing keep, is the only part of the old castle complex that has been preserved.
The five-story tower has been beautifully renovated and has been an outpost of the MuseumPasseier since 2003. The individual floors contain small exhibitions on the history of the castle, on the Schildhöfe, which are typical of the Passeier Valley, and on the Lords of Passeier and the Counts Fuchs. The fourth floor features impressive Renaissance paintings by the well-known painter Bartlme Dill Riemenschneider from 1538. Finally, on the top floor, with an impressive view over the entire valley to Merano, there is a listening station with numerous legends that surround the Jaufenburg.
THE JAUFENBURG IS OPEN EVERY MONDAY FROM JUNE TO SEPTEMBER FROM 10 AM TO 1 PM.
Special in July: family hikes to the Jaufenburg (additional charge of EUR 5 per family). Dates and registration at www.museum.passeier.it

GETTING TO JAUFENBURG:
CAR: The Jaufenburg is located on the SS 44 (approx. 20 km north of Merano or over the 2094 m high Jaufenpass from Sterzing) and can be reached via a narrow access road from the Jaufenstraße in St. Leonhard.
BUS: The stop for bus line 240 is in St. Leonhard. The journey time to and from Merano is approx. 35 minutes. The buses usually run every half hour. From the center of St. Leonhard it is a fairly steep uphill walk of approx. 30 minutes.
