Description Destination

The late medieval castle once guarded the road to the Jaufen Pass. The oldest part, the freestanding keep, is the only remaining section of the original castle complex.

The five-story tower has been beautifully renovated and, since 2003, has housed a branch of the MuseumPasseier. Each floor contains small exhibitions about the castle's history, the traditional fortified farmsteads typical of the Passeier Valley, and the Lords of Passeier and the Counts Fuchs. On the fourth floor, visitors can admire the impressive Renaissance paintings by the renowned artist Bartlme Dill Riemenschneider, dating from 1538. Finally, on the top floor, with its breathtaking views across the entire valley to Merano, there is an audio station featuring numerous legends surrounding Jaufenburg Castle.

JAUFENBURG CASTLE IS OPEN EVERY MONDAY FROM 10 AM TO 1 PM, FROM JUNE TO SEPTEMBER.
