Description Destination
The monastery village of the Carthusian monks
Behind the tranquil village of Katharinaberg in the Schnalstal valley stands the Allerengelberg monastery, founded in 1326 by the Carthusian monks. The brothers of the order lived here in seclusion and silence for over 400 years.
In the course of secularization, the monastery in Karthaus in the Schnalstal was dissolved in 1782 and the monastery buildings were converted into residential buildings. When walking around the village, the former Karthaus monastery is still clearly visible. Despite a devastating fire in 1924, the former prior's house as well as remains of the monastery walls and the monastery gate are still preserved today. Visits to the monastery village are permitted all year round; guided tours take place once a week during the summer months.
The cultural project Silentium focuses on the special peace that still prevails in Karthaus. The project group organizes changing art exhibitions in the cloister and built the Via monachorum, a spiritual hiking trail to the monastery.
The cloister, which has lost none of its charm, is used by local artists for exhibitions during the summer months.
