Picturesquely situated on Ratzeburg's old town island, nestled between the cathedral and the A. Paul Weber Museum, lies the Lauenburg District Museum. The complex, originally planned as a summer residence, was commissioned by Duke Adolph Friedrich IV of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Since 1973, the Lauenburg District Museum has been located in this unique ensemble, whose garden offers a fantastic view across the Domsee lake to the Ratzeburg suburb with its Art Nouveau villas. Due to renovations in the main building and the redesign of the permanent exhibition, only excerpts from the history of the Duchy of Lauenburg can currently be presented in the old coach house (northern annex), including a pharmacy, the Hannig photo studio with its shop and photo lab, and the exhibition "The Attitude to Life in the 1950s."

    Arriving by public transport from Hamburg and Lübeck
    The Herzogtum Lauenburg District Museum is easy to reach by bus and train from Hamburg and Lübeck. From Hamburg U Wandsbek Markt, line 8700 takes you to the center of Ratzeburg in 60 minutes, just a few minutes' walk from the district museums.
    From Lübeck, the train journey to Ratzeburg takes around 20 minutes. From Ratzeburg train station, take lines 8502, 8501, 131 to the "Markt" stop, from there it's a 350 m walk.
