Description Destination
The approximately 2 km long Altenberger Erzberg mining circular trail clearly shows that the Celts and Romans already knew about and used the iron ore deposits in Altenberg. The first written information about iron ore mining dates back to 1492. The pinge fields on the Bohnkogel and the Altenberger Erzberg probably date from this time. Around 1770, the first tunnels were dug and the ore mining underground began. In the 19th century, the Altenberg mining operation developed into the most important in the upper Mürztal. The number of people employed in the mine rose to 182 and the population to 857.
After the blast furnace operation in Neuberg was shut down, the mine in Altenberg was also closed in 1893 - "When we came to the most beautiful ore," lamented the last miners.
The beginning (station 1) is the “signal bowl” at the Groschenloch fountain on the village square. There you can take a folder with a map and descriptions of the individual stations from a Plexiglas container. Station two is the large lump of ore at the war memorial, which was supposed to have been exhibited at a world exhibition in Paris in 1878. Then the route continues via several stations to Knappendorf. You can take a detour to the “Schaller-Halde” via a newly built bridge. A look through the dummy telescope set up there shows what the miners' village looked like during the mining era around 1890. The route continues to the Grubenhaus, to former miners' houses and finally over the Altenberger Erzberg back to the starting point.
The Altenberger Erzberg Mining Trail was awarded the title "Theme Trail of the Year 2014" by Federal Minister Andrä Rupprechter.
The Montanarum mining museum is located right at the beginning of the mining circular trail in the center of Altenberg an der Rax. Objects from Altenberg’s mining history of the 18th and 19th centuries are presented here. It is recommended to visit the mining museum as part of a hike along the mining circular trail - this is open by prior appointment by telephone on +43 664 3869002.
