Description Destination
Aldein, located on the heights of the Regglberg, could only be reached by wagons on a dangerous cart track from Montan, Branzoll and Deutschnofen until the new road was built in 1958/59. Aldein was very remote and the farmers had to provide for themselves. Grain cultivation was their main source of livelihood. This is also demonstrated by the large number of mills, stamp mills and millstones that once existed in the Aldeiner municipal area.
In the first document, in which the farms and the mills belonging to them are mentioned (Urbar of 1611), ten mills are listed. In the Theresian cadastre of 1775 there are already 31 mills and 17 stamp mills and in the land register of 1911 there are finally 42 mills.
The BlacksmithsAfter the road was built, a large part of the population found work outside the area and the farmers were left alone on their farms. The labor-intensive cultivation of grain was no longer profitable and the mills fell into disrepair.
In order to save this rural cultural asset from being completely forgotten, the museum association decided to reactivate mills and stamp mills along the Thal stream. The aim of this campaign is to show the youth of Aldeiner as well as foreign visitors the use of hydropower in past times. This offer is very popular with locals, guests and school classes of all levels

The open-air museum is open from May to October with a guided tour. A minimum number of participants is required.
For organizational reasons, registration is required for each mill tour. To do so, please contact:

By car: Coming from Auer or Neumarkt, drive along the Fleimstaler road to the turnoff to Aldein / Maria Weißenstein. From there, drive along the main road for about 6 km until, after the Aldein commercial area, the road climbs up to the right into the village center. There is usually enough parking on the village square, but as an alternative, you can use the parking spaces below the community center. Buses can park at the Aldein fire station instead of driving into the village.
By bus: The South Tyrolean public transport company SAD operates a regular service from Auer train station or from Neumarkt to the pilgrimage site of Maria Weißenstein. On this service, the bus also stops very close to the village museum in the center of Aldein. The bus stop is used for both the outward and return journeys. Timetables: http://www.sii.bz.it/de
