Description Destination
The Doberan Minster, the pearl of North German brick Gothic, impresses and
fascinates its visitors with its almost completely preserved medieval furnishings.
The High Gothic cathedral is the church of the former
Cistercian monastery. It is one of the most important brick churches in the Baltic region.
The rich furnishings include the high altar (around 1300), which is considered the oldest winged altar in art history. The Sacrament Tower (around 1360) served as a storage place for the consecrated host until the Reformation and is an impressive 11.60 metres high. Also extremely remarkable is the double-sided rood screen altar with triumphal cross from around 1370. The church also contains the tomb figure of the Danish Queen Margaret Sambiria, liturgical cabinets, stained glass, gravestones and numerous epitaphs.
As a result of the Reformation in Mecklenburg, the monastery was dissolved in 1552.
The church remained as the burial place of the sovereign family and as the parish church of the
Evangelical Lutheran parish continues to exist. Today, the cathedral has a rich ecclesiastical and cultural life with regular services, devotions, concerts and themed tours.
