Description Destination

The Roman Museum, run by the municipality of Mautern, documents life in the former Roman fort of Favianis-Mautern and its surrounding civilian settlement using impressive exhibits and descriptions.
The clearly arranged exhibition collection shows finds from archaeological excavations over the last decades. The exhibits from civil and military life date from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity. The most important pieces include a Roman military diploma, clay masks, a curse tablet ("love spell") and a glazed figurine vase.
The museum is also devoted in detail to the life and work of Saint Severin, who maintained a monastery there in late antiquity and supported the Romanesque population during the turmoil of the migration period.
Not only the exhibition collection itself, but also the museum location in the former baroque granary (chute) of Mautern Castle ensure a harmonious ambience. Right next to the museum you can visit the best-preserved Roman fortifications in Austria, including towers and parts of the fort wall.
