Description Destination
The Altaussee salt mine is Austria's largest active salt mining site. Mysterious tunnels made of pure rock salt lead into the world of the miners to the chapel of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. Two long miner's slides lead you to the underground salt lake, where a spectacular light and sound show creates a magical atmosphere. During World War II, the Nazis hid works of art of inestimable value in the tunnels of the Altaussee salt mine. Treasures by Michelangelo, Dürer, Rubens, and Vermeer were in danger of being destroyed if courageous miners had not prevented the salt mines from being blown up. Original setting of the film “The Monuments Men”, special tours on the topic are offered in July and August. The Altaussee Salt Mines can also be visited in the winter months.
