In 1999, the storm Lothar left behind a large bare area between Rothaus and the Schlüchtsee nature reserve, covered with uprooted spruce trees. The then municipal forester Hartmut Frankthilfe of the municipality of Grafenhausen came up with the idea of ​​creating a nature trail on this area. The mystical roots and tree remains inspired the then manager of the Hüsli local history museum, hobby carver Herbet Hofmeier. He created the first imaginative figure. With the help of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park, the municipality of Grafenhausen, the local NABU group and the secondary school, various figures and stations were gradually created. The park was officially opened on July 29, 2005. Every three years, new figures are created as part of a small sculpture symposium with graduates of a sculpture school.
