Splügen is a typical pass village with a well-preserved villagescape, proud palazzi, sun-tanned Walser houses and belongs to the political municipality of Rheinwald.
Summer in Splügen:
Summertime is hiking time. Over 100km of marked hiking trails lead through the valley, to secluded mountain lakes and along historic passes into the neighboring valleys. The cultural and long-distance hiking trail viaSpluga leads from the village of Splügen to the Splügen Pass and further to the Italian town of Chiavenna.
Winter in Splügen:
The sunny Splügen-Tambo ski area at the foot of the majestic Pizzo Tambo on the border with Italy is the main attraction in winter. Cross-country skiing enthusiasts enjoy the 40km of snow-covered trails along the young Hinterrhein and winter hikers can choose from over 20km of perfectly groomed trails between Sufers and Hinterrhein.
About the Wakker Prize:
The Swiss Heritage Society annually awards the Wakker Prize to a political municipality or, in exceptional cases, to organizations or associations. The prize money of CHF 20,000 is of a rather symbolic nature; The value of the award lies rather in the public recognition of exemplary performance.
