The Starkenburg is located above the town of Heppenheim on the 295 m high Schlossberg. A climb to the castle is worthwhile because of the incomparable view of the Rhine plain and the Odenwald.
The hilltop castle was built in 1065 to protect the Lorsch monastery. The castle was an important refuge for the monks of the monastery. Later their importance declined. From 1765 onwards the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. Over the centuries, the keep of Starkenburg Castle became so dilapidated that it was blown up in October 1924. The striking keep, which can be seen from far away today, was only completed in 1930. It is not located, as usual, in the middle of the castle, but at the western entrance. Today the castle has a larger open space in the courtyard. Only little of the original historical building structure has been preserved. The palace is now used as a youth hostel. The Starkenburg Castle Inn is a great place to stop for a bite to eat. Weddings are also often celebrated there.
