Description Destination

Steingasse is one of the oldest streets in Salzburg's old town. Its name comes from the houses that were built directly onto the rock.
Right at the entrance to Steingasse is the Linzer Gasse Platzl, where water fountains spring from the ground in summer. At the first junction (to Stefan-Zweig-Weg) there is a large hole in one of the houses, which was made by a tank from World War II. The bar on Stefan-Zweig-Weg was the backdrop for the 2009 film "Knight and Day". There are more holes at Steingasse No. 23 - these were used as peepholes by the night watchmen in the old days. Joseph Mohr, the lyricist of the Christmas carol "Silent Night! Holy Night!", once lived at Steingasse 31. At house No. 33 is the Tändlerei, a popular photo motif, whose shutters were lowered more than 30 years ago and which is now falling into disrepair. However, its nostalgic charm has remained. At the end of the alley is the “Engelwirtsbrunnen”, an impressive wall fountain made of marble.
